Illinois has an abundance of invasive Asian Carp. These voracious eaters and prolific reproducers could wreak havoc on the Great Lakes, so the federal government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to keep them out. Our President and Founder, Brian Colgan, spent the better part of the last decade advising state and federal agencies and elected officials on Asian Carp strategies. Rather than just focus efforts on building electric barriers and underwater speaker systems to keep fish away, Brian always hoped some entrepreneur would look at Asian Carp as a commodity, not just an invasive species. He thought - if we could only find a way for people to make money off of removing Asian Carp, we’d be more effective in our federal strategies and we’d create a lot of jobs along the way. When Brian left the public sector in January 2019, he decided to launch Colgan Carp Solutions to do just that.
At Colgan Carp Solutions, our mission is to provide a private sector solution to our Asian Carp problem. Our goal is to turn Asian Carp into a sought-after commodity by modeling opportunities for entry into various markets.
So what have we found? Demand is all around us. From bait to fertilizer, pet food, and human consumption… there are numerous entry points for Asian Carp. As a new startup, we’ve run the numbers on numerous opportunities.
First up… turning Asian Carp into Lobster Bait.
Next up… working with with USAID to make Asian Carp a high-protein feed source for international aquaculture developments.
“Only a crisis - actual or perceived - produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes the politically inevitable.”
